More about Arecibo
More about the dish
More about the L band receiver 430MHz feed

Arecibo, Puerto Rico
Arecibo is the site of the world's largest single-dish radio telescope.
The huge dish is 305 m (1000 feet) in diameter, 167 feet deep, and covers
an area of about 20 acres. The surface is made of almost 40,000 perforated
aluminum panels, each measuring about 3 feet by 6 feet, supported by a network
of steel cables strung across the underlying sinkhole. It is a spherical reflector.
This resampled one-meter resolution color image of the Arecibo was taken by
Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite.

SETI@home: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. Located in Arebico, Puerto Rico. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

"If it's just us, that seems like an awful waste of space."
Carl Sagan 1934-1996

Which client should you use?
GUI - Graphical User Interface (Windows)
CLI - Command Line Interface (non-Windows or text based)
The GUI is easier to use, looks great
and can be set to run as a screensaver
and only run when your system is idle.
You can set the screen to go blank and
run even faster.
It can also be set to run all the time.
The CLI runs faster and has more 3rd party
utilities.

i386-winnt-cmdline.exe (CLI) works on all 9x,ME,NT,2K,XP and 2003 machines
Get it here
Please do not run SETI@home on computers for which you do not have authorization.
License Agreement
How can you convince your employer/organization to allow you to run SETI@home?
Find out what their concerns are, be prepared with information.
You downloaded it from an authorized, secured source.
If needed, run it only when the computer is idle (as a screensaver).
Mention the 4.7 million people in 226 countries running it.
Mention major coorporations/organizations sponsoring it and running the software.
IBM, Compaq, HP, Fuji Film, Informix, Intel, O'Reilly, Sun Microsystems,
Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), Quantum Corporation, Xilink, NetScreen,
Paramount Pictures etc.
Have press articles about SETI@home.
Have Internet links to provide to support your statements.
Explain distributed computing, and how SETI@home works.
Mention awards that SETI@home has won, like cnet.com best screensaver.
Will your employer let you run it if there is no connection to the Internet?
Allow only one computer to connect to the Internet and feed the others.
Firewall and anti-virus that computer to their satisfaction.
You can control when and if it connects to the Internet. By hand if needed.
Or take the results home at night and return them that way.
